Osteopathy lends itself very well to problems associated with sports injuries and there are specialised sports clinics in the majority of osteopathic teaching colleges.
Injuries to knees are so often due to poor muscle coordination in the thigh. Football players are particularly susceptible to knee problems because of the kicking action. I’ve treated a lot of local football players and when their knees are playing up, then it’s usually due to the hamstrings rather than the quads which often get the blame.
Hamstring problems in turn are often due to what occurs in the pelvis and lower back, if we don’t examine these areas, we will often miss the underlying causes to problems.
Another common problem in sports people is the lack of correct rehabilitation following injuries. This leads to chronic and ongoing problems that affect performance and often ends a person’s involvement ¡n a sport. This often need not happen with the correct advice and treatment early on.
